It’s a fully managed PaaS solution that allows users to effortlessly deploy their applications by simply providing their code (via a git repository) or a pre-built container image. What’s new in the May 2024 App Platform release

Over the past months, the DigitalOcean team has been hard at work talking to customers to better understand their needs and building out new features to meet those requests. The reimagined App Platform improves the app creation experience for users while lowering the total cost of ownership, enabling users to seamlessly deploy a wide range of applications—from web interfaces and business solutions to cutting-edge microservice-based applications. Some of the major updates include:

• Removal of tiers, bringing more flexibility to build what you need

Here’s a closer look at the exciting new features of the revamped App Platform:

Enhanced pricing and packaging for growing businesses

DigitalOcean’s commitment to fostering business growth is reflected in the revamped pricing model and updated packaging of App Platform. Key highlights include:

• Simplified packaging with the elimination of tiers (starter, basic, pro).

• Expanded range of dedicated instances (from 3 to 9 instances) with options ranging from 1vcpu/0.5GB to 8vcpu/32GB.

• 35% lower pricing for dedicated instances.

• Much higher egress data transfer allowance. Data transfer allowance is now given per instance, as opposed to per application in the past.

• 80% reduction in bandwidth overage fee (from 10 cents/GiB to 2 cents/GiB)*.

With the removal of the basic and professional tiers, customers can mix and match different instance types to create tailored solutions for their specific use cases.

Hassle-free scaling with autoscaling

In an era of fluctuating workloads, developers require infrastructure that can efficiently handle varying demands without manual intervention. App Platform has now introduced CPU-based autoscaling, enabling customers to scale applications horizontally based on utilization metrics. By automatically adjusting container instances within preset minimum and maximum limits, App Platform optimizes resource usage and costs, allowing seamless scalability.

Strengthened security with Dedicated IPs

Recognizing the importance of data security, App Platform introduces Dedicated Egress IP, allowing users to assign unique static IP addresses for outgoing traffic. This feature enhances security by enabling IP whitelisting, thereby controlling access to third-party services and APIs. This provides a stable and uninterrupted connection, helping to safeguard the transmission of sensitive data.
